Overcoming Fear

Life Is What We Make of It

You Decide the Outcome of Your Life

It sounds obvious.

But if everyone understood this, we wouldn’t have people stuck in unhappy jobs or relationships.

One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves in life is that we don’t have a choice.

“I need money so I have to stay in this job.”

“I’ve been through so much with this person already so I have to stay in this relationship.”

These are the false beliefs that keep us stuck.

The Illusion of Control

I use to think that I had complete control over my life. After all, didn’t I pick what I wanted to study in college and what I wanted to do for work?

But after working six jobs and still getting nowhere to finding the “right” job, I started to question why.

Why was I never satisfied with any of the jobs that I chose?

Then it became clear to me. My jobs were not the issue. I was the issue.

I was not happy with my jobs because I wasn’t following my heart, not because I couldn’t find the right job. I just kept using it as an excuse because I didn’t want to admit that it was me.

As long as I kept the illusion of the “right” job alive, I would be safe. I wouldn’t have to take responsibility for following my heart.

Responsibilities

We often think of responsibilities as our bills or obligations to other people but what about ourselves?

Is it not our responsibility to fulfill our dreams? Is it not our obligation to make ourselves happy? If not, then whose is it?

So many people think it’s our lovers’, our families’ or our jobs’ responsibilities to make us happy. But it’s not. They can certainly contribute to our happiness but it is ultimately our job to make ourselves happy.

Once I understood this, I stopped waiting for the right job, the right person or the right time. I decided to take matters into my own hands.

The day I booked myself a one-way ticket to Asia was the day that I took responsibility for my life. That was the first time I took control.

It was terrifying but it was the first time that I actually felt like I was living.

Stop Giving Away Your Power

Every time you say you cannot do something because of a circumstance or a person, you are giving away your power.

Your partner, your family, your job cannot physically stop you (if they do, you’ve got bigger issues), which means YOU are the only person standing in your way.

Maybe you’re afraid of what people will think of you, or maybe you’re worried that you’ll lose the person that you love, but those are your fears and insecurities.

They have nothing to do with the other person.

It’s not anyone’s job to give you permission to do what you love. Stop blaming other people and stop waiting for approval.

The only person you need approval from is you.

Regrets

No one regrets feeding elephants. No one.

One of my biggest fears in life is regrets and I am grateful for it.

Regrets push me to continually do the things that I’m scared of. Regrets are the reason why I get up every day to try to make it the best day.

It doesn’t mean that I always have a great day, it just means that even when I have a horrible day, I don’t let it control me. I choose how I want to react to it.

There are way too many things in life that we cannot control already, why give up the things that we can?

Our reactions, thoughts, and decisions.

What will you regret in a few years if you don’t do it today?
